(ABC 6 News) -- For the first time since its creation in 2011, the Governor's Pheasant Hunting Opener will be held in southeastern Minnesota.
The Department of Natural Resources announced plans Friday to hold the event in Austin in 2019, the same year Albert Lea will host the Governor's Fishing Opener.
While it's still unclear who will be governor for the event, Austin Mayor Tom Stiehm said it's a chance to showcase the region's natural resources in an area not commonly associated with hunting and fishing.
"Everybody thinks of Minnesota, and they think of Up North and you go Up North; that's where the fishing is, that's where the Boundary Waters and that's where the hunting is, but down south here we have a tradition of hunting and fishing, too," Stiehm said.
The pheasant opener has been held in a number of cities, including Mankato, Marshall and Worthington. This year, it's being held in Luverne, in far southwestern Minnesota.
The opener is set for Oct. 11-12, 2018. The fishing opener in Albert Lea will take place May 9-12, 2018.
