“We don’t have to really work hard. We just get out there and the community does the rest.” Halsey said.

August is Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness (SMA) month, and already in 2019 the FDA has approved a gene therapy to treat babies with SMA, changing the outcome for families that are delivered the diagnosis.

“Treatments mean hope for families. We’re seeing the first progress of families that are living with neuromuscular diseases are making milestones that they never have been able to make.” Said Gina Olson, executive director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association Minnesota.

Donations are invested into local resources including care centers at Mayo in Rochester and other facilities across the state.

“All of the donations made by the local fire department here stay local in Minnesota and Dakotas to be able to send children to MDA summer camp as well as clinical appointments, opportunity to go to support groups and just support services to help them on their everyday lives.” Olson said.

The Austin Fire Department will be at the intersections of Fourth Street & First Drive Northwest, Eighth Avenue & 14th Street Northwest and Oakland Avenue near the fire station Wednesday through Friday from 3-6pm.
