(ABC 6 News) -- The city of Austin has declared its first snow emergency of the season.
Beginning at 8 a.m. Wednesday, drivers are required to park on the even side of the road on days ending with an even number and on the odd side of the road on odd-numbered days. Parking in business areas downtown, at the Sterling Shopping Center, near the Hormel Foods plant and the east side business area is prohibited between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. to allow plows to clear snow.
With so many successive snowfalls, driving is becoming difficult in some spots in town as high snow banks make visibility from driveways and at intersections difficult, something city engineer Steven Lang said is hard for crews to address when all of their time is dedicated to making the roads passable.
"Clearing intersections, widening roadways with our snowblowers, things like that, that all comes three, four, five after a snow event," Lang said. "If we're getting a snow event one every four days, that doesn't allow us to follow up with those cleanups."
The snow emergency is in effect until at least Saturday morning.
