(ABC 6 News) - According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Highway 65 in Albert Lea is closed in both directions from Garfield Ave. to South Broadway due to flooding.

Motorists are asked to collow the detour and also be on alert for other water on roadways issuing these tips:

  • Do not drive around barricades or into flooded areas.
  • 6 inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and possible stalling.  A foot of water will float many vehicles and 2 feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles, including SUVs and pickup trucks.
  • When a raod is closed it is illegal to drive in that area; you could be fined up to $1,000 and/or 90 days in jail.
