(ABC 6 News) -- Albert Lea High School Principal Mark Grossklaus could be leaving the district to become the next superintendent of the Cannon Falls Area Schools.

Cannon Falls School Board Chairman Bob Brintnall said the board selected Grossklaus as their pick to replace Superintendent Beth Giese at a meeting Wednesday night.

Brintnall said the decision was difficult due to receiving a number of qualified applicants. Among the finalists were Southland Superintendent Jeff Sampson and Jean Duffy, the curriculum director for Becker Public Schools northwest of the Twin Cities.

The district and Grossklaus are now expected to begin negotiations ahead of a possible approval at their March 25 board meeting.

Giese is leaving Cannon Falls after nearly two decades with the district in a number of roles, Brintnall said. In January, she was hired as the new school superintendent in St. Francis, Minnesota.
