(ABC 6 News) - In his short lifetime, 8-year-old Coltin Kenning has been diagnosed with more than 40 different health conditions, including “major brain issues” according to his mom Stephanie Kenning.
“He recently had his 17th brain surgery July 8th,” she said.
All week Coltin and his mom—who live in Kimball, Minnesota—have been at Mayo Clinic. Tuesday, his mom told Coltin she would take him out for pizza in between appointments.
However, she was secretly planning a surprise lunch meetup with officers from the Rochester Police Department. She says he’s loved law enforcement for years.
"Probably since he was in pre-school. He's always liked police officers, always wanted to be one," she said.
She was expecting a small get together over pizza, but with an official proclamation from Mayor Norton and a swearing-in ceremony by Chief Jim Franklin, it turned into much more.
"It was more than what I asked for, more than what I ever could have thought that they came up with and that's just awesome," she said.
Chief Franklin said a whole afternoon of activities was planned for Coltin with the police department.
"He really does exhibit the values that we look for, that specific one being courage as he has faced what he has faced and overcome the adversity in his life. We're proud to be a part of his life," said Chief Franklin.
Kenning hopes this moment will instill courage in her son as he continues on to battle his conditions.
"Something special like this was probably a dream come true for him", said Kenning.
