14-year-old girl helped save family escape mobile home fire

(ABC 6 News) – A 14-year-old girl helped save her family after a weekend mobile home fire in Albert Lea.

Just before 7 a.m. on Saturday, Albert Lea Fire and Police Departments went to a fire at a mobile home in the 900 block of Gene St. in Albert Lea.

According to officials, a mother and two children were asleep in the mobile home when the fire started. That’s when one of the children, a 14-year-old girl, alerted her mother to the fire and all three made it out safely.

Upon arrival, crews found fire coming out of two windows of the home. Fire crews verified that all occupants had already evacuated the mobile home. They then entered the home and extinguished the fire. Crews were on scene for about two hours extinguishing hot spots. The home had significant smoke damage throughout with many rooms also damaged by fire. Total damages are estimated at $20,000.

Though the cause is undetermined at this time, the fire appears to be accidental. The State Fire Marshal’s Office will assist with the investigation. No injuries were reported.

Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service also assisted with the response.
