(ABC 6 News) - The Supreme Court blocked the Trump administration's attempt to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Thursday.
This was an Obama-Era program that protects immigrants brought to the United States as children from deportation.
The 5-4 ruling in the high court was written by chief justice John Roberts.
The decision allows Dreamers to continue to renew their membership to the program, meaning work authorization can be obtained and members are protected from deportation.
Minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar said Thursday's ruling is a victory for Dreamers across the country.
In a statement she said... "We must keep working towards comprehensive immigration reform to ensure that dreamers and their families have a path to citizenship. We cannot allow their fate to be decided by political whims, I will keep fighting for a permanent solution."
Dr. Jess Garcia is a licensed clinical psychologist in Rochester. She specializes in forensic psychology and Latino mental health and she said more work needs to be done.
"For example in the Rochester public school district, while there are roughly around 40 percent students of color, there are about five percent educators of color and our immigrant community is so vibrant and so invested in Rochester," Dr. Garcia said. "I think that if we're giving them the opportunity also to recognize that black lives matter and our immigrant communities matter, that it will just make for a more colorful and diverse community."
Dr. Garcia said Minnesota should take a stand to protect the immigrant population throughout the state.
"This is allowing us to keep these protections in place for DACA recipients but doesn't necessarily mean a lasting link or change to immigration reform," she said. "It's a step in the right direction in that we're hopefully moving towards that comprehensive immigration reform that works for the betterment for not just our immediate community here in Rochester but for all Minnesotans around the country."
