(ABC 6 News) - Americans are getting more time to comply with the federally mandated REAL ID.
The Department of Homeland Security announced Thursday that the deadline to apply for the REAL ID has been extended by a year. This extension is due to closures at the Department of Motor Vehicles as a result of the coronavirus.
The original deadline was Oct. 1, 2020, and is now pushed back to Oct. 1, 2021.
The new ID will be required for anyone trying to fly from U.S. airports.
In Minnesota, there were 642,040 REAL ID holders as of Feb. 28, or 13.62% of Minnesota driver's licenses and identification card holders.
