(ABC 6 NEWS) - For many at the start of the pandemic and throughout the summer, this was a chance to get outside, enjoy the weather, and maybe even try something new. One fly fishing shop in Preston is helping do just that through October.
Mel Hayner owns The Driftless Fly Fishing Company where kayaking, equipment, and classes are all offered. Hayner has been fly fishing most of his life and opened the shop in 2013. When he moved to Minnesota, he found out how great the trout streams were and decided to open a shop in Preston, a first for the town.
"It's something that anybody can do, once you learn the basics of it. Part of what we do is we are going to strip away the mystery of it. You know a lot of people think boy that looks hard, but it's really not. It does take a lot of practice, and one of the great things about it is its lifelong learning," Hayner said.
The shop is currently offering free lessons to anyone that wants to try fly fishing. With all the gear supplies, Hayner says "We get them in waders and fly rods, and we go right down here to the south branch and root river, which is one of the top trout streams in the nation and we try to catch a few fish." He says any time of the year is a great time to fly fish, and even through COVID-19, the shop has continued to operate with some small changes.
