(ABC 6 News) - Mayo Clinic has announced they've developed a test that can detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus in clinical samples.
Mayo said the SARS-CoV virus causes COVID-19 and that the test has been fully validated and data will be submitted to the Food and Drug Administration for review and emergency use authorization.
"This is an issue the whole world is grappling with, so we felt like this was our moral obligation to offer testing to as many people as we can," says Dr. Matthew Binnicker, a clinical microbiologist and director of the Clinical Virology Laboratory at Mayo Clinic.
The test is to help ease the burden that is currently being felt at the CDC and state public health laboratories. "We are doing everything we can to help relieve the burden during this time to provide answers for patients here in Rochester and around the world," says William Morice II, M.D., Ph.D., president of Mayo Clinic Laboratories.
