(ABC 6 News) -- The Hubbell House has been a staple in Mantorville for years under the Pappas family legacy. That's why now that the restaurant is sold, owner Donald Pappas says it's a bitter sweet reality.
For over 70 years, Pappas says he and his family have built a reputation in the community that welcomes everyone. Although it was never a concrete plan to sell the business, now that it's happening he's overwhelmed with emotions.
Pappas said the restaurant was never listed for sale, but the family always had this idea of the day coming when they might want to step back from the business. According to Pappas, through mutual conversation and similar business values, the thought of passing the legacy along felt like the right thing to do.
The Hubbell House owner announced on Thursday that the restaurant has been sold to Powers Ventures, another family oriented company who owns the Rochester restaurant Canadian Honker.
"I think that we are doing the right thing at the right time and we are turning it over to just a wonderful family that nears mind very much, they have their own legacy going and I think they''ll take this place well into the future," said Pappas.
In April, the Mantorville-based business will be passed on to the Powers family and Joe said he feels obligated to continue the reputation the Pappas' have created.
The Canadian Honker owner said the new restaurant is a big challenge in itself.
"It's a little overwhelming just because of the fact that it's over 300 seats. It's a very very large restaurant," said Powers.
"It's going to be a lot to take on but we feel like we've been doing this for 36 years and my family is invested. I'm not saying it's going to be easy but quite frankly we're going to continue to do what's being done," said Powers.
Pappas said that these last few weeks are going to be fun, and a little sad at the same time, but he's happy to be able to step back from the business and watch the Powers family carry on the Hubbell House.
(ABC 6 News) - It is not only a landmark but a legacy in Dodge County and now, the Hubbell House Restaurant has new owners.
The Pappas family has owned and operated the restaurant since 1946 and it is on the register of historic places.
The Post Bulletin is reporting that Don Pappas is selling the business to Powers Venture Group which owns Rochester's Canadian Honker, Mayowood Stone Barn, and the International Events Center.
Members of the Pappas family will stay to manage the place. The deal is expected to close in April.
