(ABC 6 News) -- It was a welcome fit for heroes.  The Hayfield community spent Sunday afternoon welcoming the Vikings boys basketball team. They came home after clinching the Class A boys basketball state tournament championship title at Target Center on Saturday.

The community came out in full force to show their support for the boys and their coach, "Unbelievable, the support we got. Not just today,  the whole season, and every year for that matter. And, obviously, when you make the state tournament and you win it, everybody comes out for it. It will never be forgotten," said Vikings head coach, Chris Pack on Sunday.

Coach Pack says he is very thankful to all of the people who supported them, especially his family who sacrificed a lot for the team.

At the victory homecoming on Sunday afternoon, the Hayfield Fire Department led a parade, carrying the team on one of their firetrucks around town.  Then, a gathering at the Hayfield High School football field, where a crowd cheered the team as the Vikings presented their trophy and medals.

Ron Evjen and Doug Matti were two of those fans who came to the event. They went to the state championships in 1967 and 1968 as members of the Vikings team, "This is tremendous on the part of this team," Evjen said. "A lot of the kids put a lot of extra time in and it's a good reward for them," Matti said.

Matti said he still loves this team and that he's glad the team made it to the state championship this year.
