(ABC 6 News) - A special memorial service was held in Mason City Thursday night for families who’ve lost a child during pregnancy or infancy.

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Each year, the hospital invites all families who’ve had a stillbirth within the past year to attend the program. Many come back year after year. It’s an opportunity for families and birthing center staff to reflect and remember.

“What I’ve learned over the years is that sometimes people try to forget or not want to talk about it. These families, they want to talk about it. They want to show me their baby’s hair and their little feet. It’s really special to them for you to not forget that that’s their baby,” said Director of Women’s and Children’s Services at MercyOne North Iowa Linda Latham.

MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center and Fullerton Funeral Home have been holding the annual event for 13 years.
