Semi driver pronounced dead following serious crash Wednesday morning

(ABC 6 News) -- UPDATE 3:45 pm - The Mason City Police Department said a crash Wednesday morning left one person dead and sent another to the hospital.

Chief Jeff Brinkley said a semi heading south on N California Ave went through a stop sign without stopping and collided with a Chevrolet Silverado. 

The semi left the road and went into a cornfield where it caught on fire. Chief Brinkley said the driver, 52-year-old Amar Pinjo of Waterloo, Iowa, was thrown from the semi and was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The driver of the SUV, 57-year-old Matt Hoveland of Osage, Iowa was taken to the hospital but has since been released.

The Mason City Police Department was assisted by the Mason City Fire Department, the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol, Mason City Operations and Maintenance, the Iowa Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Enforcement, and the Iowa Department of Transportation Maintenance Division.

Emergency crews are on the scene of a serious crash in Mason City, Iowa Wednesday morning. 

According to Mason City Police Chief Jeff Brinkley, there is a motor vehicle crash and fire at Highway 122 and California. Chief Brinkley is asking people avoid that area to allow first responders to work.
