(ABC 6 News) - People in Mason City now have new way to move around town.
The city has approved for Bird to bring their stand up electric scooters to the community.
“We’re happy to have them. I’m glad that they’re looking at smaller communities because frankly these scooters were really only available in larger communities really up until now,” said City Administrator Aaron Burnett.
Burnett says the scooters support the micro mobility movement in Mason City, which is something many young professionals living downtown are motivated by.
“That idea of trying to build density in a downtown really needs the assistance of people being able to get around downtown if they don’t have a car,” Burnett said. “It’s important that we continue to embrace that if we want to stay attractive for that young workforce and for people to stay within our community, then we need to provide those amenities.”
Up in Albert Lea, the council is close to securing scooters too. An agreement could be approved at the next meeting.
Electric scooters are something people love to hate, but Burnett says the benefits should outweigh the issues.
“For sure there will be issues. People will ride irresponsibly and we’ll have to correct that,” said Burnett.
Bird could bring the scooters to Mason City as early as next week.
