(ABC 6 News) -- With summer already here for many local students, parents might be wondering how to keep their kids engaged with learning during the offseason.

That’s why the Rochester Public Library started the Summer Playlist in 2017. This year’s initiative kicked off Saturday, June 1st.

"The summer playlist is our all ages all activities program that really is meant to encourage everyone from babies to grandparents to participate in summer," said Head of Marketing and Community Engagement for the Rochester Public Library Karen Lemke.

Saturday, she was stationed at the Watson Soccer Complex, handing out activity logs. There were four other locations in the area encouraging both kids and adults to participate in the series.

The activity logs encourage people to do things like read under a tree, or ask a librarian for a random book recommendation.

"It's great to have a kind of a summer playlist or activity log so the kids can have something academic they can check off throughout the summer and it keeps them on task, makes it fun and has a way for them to shoot for a goal,” said local parent John Zeuli.

His son Connor is excited to get reading this summer, "Reading is my favorite thing,” he said.

But for people who have a difficult time reading, or don’t want to read over the summer, Lemke said there are other learning options to keep them engaged.

"We kind of changed the program to include many different styles of learning. Whether that's trying those new things or talking and learning by having a conversation with a neighbor or by experiencing a program or an activity. That's really changed the program so it's much more inclusive," she said.

She hopes it encourages people to do new things this summer.

"Read and connect and explore and discover new things all summer long instead of being connected to devices or not doing anything or not trying anything new.  The program is really aimed at encouraging people to get out and do things," she said.
