Donation Sets Stage For Southland Auditorium Update

(ABC 6 News) -- The Southland School District could have a new auditorium if it's able to meet its $630,000 fundraising goal by December.

Last fall, voters approved an $18.2 million referendum for updates at the middle/high school, but the auditorium was not part of the project's scope. After receiving a $100,000 donation and an additional pledge from United Farmers State Bank to match another up to $150,000 in community contributions, the stage is set to add the auditorium updates to the larger project if the district can meet its goal.

"There's a little bit of a struggle with just the visual of it with the open bare walls, the open floor, it's hard to control flow so sometimes in the middle of a concert somebody will just walk across the stage," band director Amalie Niethammer said of the current space.

In a fundraising pitch on its website, the district said they hope they can complete the auditorium project at the same time as the larger remodel to save money.

Niethammer said she would love to see a space that matches her students' talents and the effort they put into every performance.

"Having a performance space that matches their abilities would be wonderful, to have something that visually fits, is less distracting, there's not the athletic equipment, the basketball hoops hanging over the top, the acoustics, being able to hear everything that the students have been working on," she said.

Those who would like to contribute can mail a check to the district office by December 1. The district hopes to have the project done by August 2020, alongside the larger updates approved as part of the referendum.
