(ABC 6 News) -- Austin High School's choir director is retiring at the end of the year. On Wednesday night, he gave his last performance not knowing there was a surprise in store.
Former students and current members of the choir joined together to sing a final farewell to Brian Johnson. Johnson had been leading the choir for 31 years.
In that time they have earned some impressive accolades, performing on Minnesota Public Radio, in front of state educators and even in New Orleans.
But Johnson said what he hopes he will be remembered for most is the influence he had on students.
"That singing can be fun and you can do really well at it at the same time, that's what id like to leave," Johnson said.
Students also sent him off with some parting gifts including a photo album, items for travel and a cane.
