(ABC 6 News) - United Way of Freeborn County is hosted a final drive through Pop Up Pantry and a mask distribution at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds Friday afternoon.
This is a collaborative effort between UWFC, Channel One Regional Food Bank, Freeborn County Public Health & the Freeborn Emergency Operations Center to accomplish this distribution.
Throughout the summer, several distributions have giving out thousands of pounds of food.
Every month since May, and it had planned on ending in September. Unfortunately, the food bank got the call that the need was still there and worked out logistics to host bonus drives in October and for November.
Organizers say this afternoon they gave out 490 boxes of food and an additional 190 gallons of milk. Unfortunately, they did have to turn some people away.
"Food is an essential need and community leaders are working hard to improvise, to come up with new programs and help break that cycle of poverty so that no one is going to be hungry," says Erin Haag, Executive Director of United Way of Freeborn County.
Organizers say they've heard from several participants offering gratitude for a variety of reasons, some are struggling with having hours cut at work and others are high risk and worry about going to the store being High risk individuals.
