(ABC 6 News) - While many project developments come to a standstill during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mason City's River City Renaissance Project remains resilient.

The River Mason City, a multi million dollar housing development just south of the downtown mall, is nearing completion.

City Administrator Aaron Burnett says that while some partners are unsure about moving forward with new projects during this time, the trust they've given is a compliment to the project.

"There's been so much work put into it. There's research, there's studies and just a lot of effort by the community to back this project - is really what's kept it moving forward," said Burnett.

Just steps away from the excitement downtown, a spin off to the renaissance project is now complete. Dinesh Padel is the new owner of the Econo Lodge Inn & Suites. He was quick to recognize the newfound vibrancy downtown and turned a once dilapidated motel into a welcoming stay for visitors.

"More people are brought in the with arena, the new development next to The River, and maybe the new hotel with the convention center. That also helps (my) business as well. This is a really good opportunity to make it work," Padel said.

"The development that we're seeing and the continued progress in the residential market and in the hospitality sector is really due to Mason City doing a better job at telling its story. We're starting to put together that data that compels people to invest, but we're also showing them all the great things that we have and the momentum and people like that excitement. They want to be part of that," said Burnett.

Recently, the city received a grant from the state for the next phase of the project, a performing arts pavilion on the plaza.

Burnett says the pavilion and a new hotel and conference center are set to break ground by the end of the year.
