(ABC 6 NEWS) - When school moved online in March many sports and activities were also shut down across Minnesota, but now that school is back in session many of those activities like Just for Kix in Austin are back.
From mommy and me classes all the way up to high school, Austin Just for Kix dancers have been back in front of the mirror dancing and learning for almost a week. Over the summer, Just for Kix tried out some outside classes. Director, Madaline Rohr said the kids almost didn't know how to talk to each other because it had been so long since they had danced together.
From there the Just for Kix team worked on getting their dancers back into the studio. "We care about them, so we want to make sure they are doing well too. And dance is a good way to feel good, see your friends, and with the precautions, we have do it safely," Rohr said.
There are some changes to each class, some have fewer students, they are socially distanced and the teachers wear masks. The dancers are allowed to take their masks off if they are socially distanced from others, but can still wear their mask if they prefer to. They are still doing the kick line, but with their hands on their hips, not touching those around them. Now that they are back, Rohr says this was much needed for the dancers and teachers.
"As soon as we started teaching them choreography, and getting the music nice and loud again in the gym and the studio. It kind of brought some life back, and we all got a little emotional, and we're like we missed this. And the kids were just smiling from ear to ear and I think it is a moment I will never forget," Rohr said.
For any student that might live with someone that is immunocompromised, Just for Kix Austin is live-streaming their classes for these students. They are accepting students whenever, and if you are interested you can check out Just for Kix by clicking here.
