(ABC 6 News) - Smoking and vaping is an added risk during the COVID-19 crisis.

Smoking and vaping weakens the lungs, which makes COVID-19 even more dangerous, considering the virus causes breathing issues.

"Early data from China suggests that smokers are more likely to get serious complications requiring intensive care unit and ventilation support, and even an increased risk for death," Mayo Clinic's Medical Director of Nicotine Dependency Center Dr. J. Taylor Hays said.

People are taking every precaution to stay healthy right now, staying home under quarantine and washing their hands diligently. Hays says that quitting smoking is good for the lungs during the pandemic and would have great health benefits long-term.

"Now is the time to give it a try because it will reduce your risk for complications, reduce your risk of developing serious symptoms even if you don't require hospitalization. Your symptoms of cough and your ability to recover from the infection will be much shorter if you're not smoking versus if you are," Hays said.
