(ABC 6 News) - After a convening of Mower County Fair officials Monday night, the 2020 Mower County Fair has officially been canceled.
Several community members told ABC 6 on Tuesday that prior to its cancelation, they had concerns over the event taking place.
Many shared a fear that attending an event like the fair where large numbers of people are gathering in close proximity, could put them at higher risk of catching the coronavirus.
“I think it’s the best thing to do because the fair is so crowded,” said one Mower County resident.
“It’d just be a bunch of trouble and people wouldn’t want to follow the rules anyway when you get out there,” another said.
For a while, the fair was the last remaining hope at the sense of a normal summer.
“I’m surprised that it took this long for it to happen. I think that in the long run, it was destined not to be open and I think that’s the right decision,” said Mower County resident Paul Worlein.
Worlein also shared concerns that the fair could have attracted a much larger audience than just Mower County.
“They could come from all areas of the state here just to attend that fair. How would you control the number of people that would be coming to that fair? I can’t imagine it,” Worlein said.
On the other side of the argument, residents like Carl Wagner are disappointed that the younger crowd won’t get the opportunities he once had.
“I feel sorry for them. It’s a waste, and it should continue. The fair should be on. There should be no cancellation,” said Wagner.
The community shares the hope that by scrapping the summer of 2020, many of the beloved events may return next summer.
