(ABC 6 News) - With schools closed and people staying home, local schools have started summer renovation projects early.
Saint Charles is capitalizing on the early arrival of "summer."
"Initially we were going to do it June 1 when the track season was done and cross our fingers that it would be ready for fall-- maybe go into the school year a little bit," Saint Charles Athletic Director and baseball coach Scott McCready said.
Instead, the Saints started the renovation of their soccer field early, tearing up the grass and preparing the site for its new blanketing of turf.
"Sadly we've got our corona problems and we're on quarantine and we're out of the building. The company was able to get started early so at least there's a little silver lining here that we're able to get this done during some dead time," McCready said.
The Saints will use the new field in as many ways as possible. It will be at the disposal for nearly every athletics program to practice on, and will hold the soccer team's home games.
North of Saint Charles, Lake City is undergoing their own upgrade. The Tigers, with a rich basketball history, are giving their court a facelift. The Tigers got an earlier start than expected, which principal and basketball coach Greg Berge says is a blessing for when sports make their long-anticipated return.
"We don't know what's going to happen this summer in terms of activities, but if we are able to have any activities it'll be nice to have this court completed at that time," Berge said.
Berge and a group of other coaches and administrators were able to customize the court. It is expected to be finished this summer, as is the new field in Saint Charles.
