(ABC 6 News) -- A new ice cream shop held a soft opening on Wednesday, and the reason behind The Chocolate Twist is sweetening the deal for customers.
“Started maybe a couple years ago, even longer with 'wouldn't it be great if Boys & Girls Club had a business to bring money into the club?’” said Claudia Tabini, a board member for the Boys & Girls Club of Rochester.
All the profits from the ice cream store will go directly to programming for the club.
“The more money we make as profit, the more children we can serve in our community,” Tabini said.
However, the new business is about more than advancing the club.
“We will employ teens, particularly teens that are in Boys & Girls Club, as much as possible," Tabini said.
Members like Tiera Felder.
“The Boys & Girls Club has made me a better person, given me more confidence," Felder said.
Felder will now learn important skills that are not taught in school.
“Skills like marketing, customer service to training in management,” Tabini said. “There's some curriculum-based programs that they will follow.”
These enrichment opportunities go beyond scooping ice cream.
“We don't want to keep them forever,” Tabini said. “We want this to be a stepping stone to a better job.”
With each sweet treat, customers will be supporting a club that supports youth. As The Chocolate Twist motto goes, “Helping People Never Tasted so Good."
The Chocolate Twist is located at 311 South Broadway Ave. in downtown Rochester. The store is open Wednesday through Friday from noon to 7:00 p.m., Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
