(ABC 6 News) – Students at Sumner Elementary in Austin took part in the annual flag walk Wednesday.

Students created a flag representing a cultural heritage, then walked a short parade route through the neighborhood.

School leaders said the walk is just one way to celebrate all of the different cultures Austin has.

It’s also a good time for students to ask questions like "Where were you born?" or "What flag do you have?"

Leaders say it’s important to be willing to accept everyone, regardless of where they came from.

"This is just a way to kind of include a little bit of the public eye in the work that we do here which is so important. We feel that we’re a huge community here in Austin that welcomes everyone and it’s obvious because of all the different cultures that we have represented here and we think that is such a great asset and that should be celebrated," Sumner Elementary Principal Sheila Berger said.

They say it’s a great way to get outside and to join in on the week-long celebration of Welcoming Week in Austin.
