(ABC 6 News) –  The unofficial Mama Bear of the Austin Bruins is taking on a new role for the team.

For the last 10 years, the Bruins have run their Healthy Habits program through their front office, but this year, they decided to get their volunteers involved. That’s when Austin native, and longtime billet Mom, Sue Stowell came to mind.

“It was so obvious,” Bruins Director of Broadcasting, TJ Chillot said. “I see what she does as a billet, I know the billet kids she has had rave about her and how she takes such good care of them and then when I found out, that she also volunteers in her free time with Senior Helping Seniors, it also sounded too good to be true."

Sue is now the Healthy Habits Coordinator for both the Bruins and the Rochester Grizzlies. The goal of the program is to help get players more involved in their communities. Of course, the coronavirus pandemic has created challenges in organizing events, but it’s not stopping Sue.

"We're doing as much as we can in the community and being involved in anything that's going on out doors so that we have the social distancing going on and that the team is still involved in communities,” Stowell said.

Over the last couple of weeks, members of the team have safely gone into the Austin community to volunteer at Ruby’s Pantry and helped clean up local parks.

Since the team’s Healthy Habits program, “She's really taken initiative with that and that's just something that speaks about her character, who she is."

Whether Sue is stitching names onto jerseys or helping the junior hockey teams with their community outreach, Sue has become an essential and beloved part of the Bruins organization.

"Her and her son have been a huge role model for me now and I'm at a loss for words to how much they mean to me now and what they've done for me and I'm really looking forward to this season,” Tyler Shea, one of the players living with Sue, said.

The Bruins open their season on Friday against the Aberdeen Wings. Game is set for 7:15 on the road.
