(ABC 6 NEWS) - High school juniors and seniors in the Mower County CEO program will debut their 'Travel Back in Time' event this Friday and Saturday night.
The Mower County CEO program launched three years ago and is a way to give juniors and seniors at Austin and Pacelli High Schools real-world business experience.
"It's really gotten me out of my comfort zone," said Austin High School senior, Brenda Talamantes.
The program gives students a chance to run their own business as a class and as an individual.
"We learned a lot about the business side of the world and stuff and how to do business, but we also learned a lot about the community around us," said Pacelli High School junior, Blake Klingfus.
Each year, they create a class business.
"They had to come up with something where they can make money and run their business," said Emily Hovland, the facilitator of the program.
The students navigated the pandemic all while finding something to profit off of.
"We ended up deciding on a drive-in theater," said Klingfus.
The students wanted to give people something to enjoy.
"We just thought this would be a really good family thing for everybody to get out of their house and have something to do," Talamantes said.
The class has worked to get sponsors, create advertising, get movie rights, and more. The money raised will help the students jump-start their individual businesses.
"They'll pay all of their bills first and then once they've paid their bills that money that is left over then supports them in their individual business that they will be starting," said Hovland.
"Especially for me since I have my own business which is lip glosses and lip scrubs and it has really been a big challenge for me because at first, I was like how am I gonna do this? what am I gonna do? But then ever since Hovland had taught this to us I really like learned a lot," said Talamantes.
They hope to have everyone join them for their 'Travel Back in Time' event Friday and Saturday night. Tickets are $45 per vehicle and can be purchased at the gate at the Riverland Community College main parking lot.
