Target confirmed Saturday afternoon that cash registers in stores around the country are back online after widespread outages.
In a release, Target stated that the outages that lasted for about two hours were caused by "internal technology issues."
The release continued to say that the outages did not involve a data breach or security-related issue, and no guest information was compromised.
"We appreciate all of our store team members who worked quickly to assist guests and thank everyone involved for their patience," Target said in the release.
KSTP's Kirsten Swanson confirmed with customers and employees at Target that cash registers were not functioning throughout the United States Saturday afternoon.
Customers in Dinkytown reported that one register became available for check out at around 2:45 p.m. Saturday.
This outage caused extremely long lines prevented customers from checking out.
"There were lines of 20 or more people," Target customer Lynn Brysiewicz said after calling it quits and taking her business elsewhere.
Jeremy Kurtz of Minneapolis said that he was on his way into Target Midway when other customers exiting the store told him not to bother entering. But Kurtz opted to see for himself.
"It was sort of mild chaos inside," Kurtz said. "Mostly, it's abandoned shopping carts..."
Employees tried to make the best of the situation. In videos posted to social media sites, sales associates can be seen handing out bottled water to people waiting. Other employees stuck close to the store entrances to warn customers who came to shop in the middle of the outage.
"She said you can try at your own risk it might work, but they're not sure," said Heidi Boaz, who left the Dinkytown location empty-handed.
Target is not immune to technology issues. A similar cash register outage occurred on June 15, 2014, that knocked systems out across the country for 20 minutes.
Most notably, the Minnesota-based retailer was hit with malware that was installed in its checkout system in 2013. The breach resulted in a data heist that exposed personal information in more than 40 million credit and debit card accounts.
