A Minnesota couple is trying to become the first in the nation to make and serve alcohol on their family dairy farm.

Alise and Lucas Sjostrom want to open a distillery at Redhead Creamery in Brooten, Minnesota.

The couple would makes spirits from whey — a byproduct of cheese-making. Whey contains lactose, which means it can be fermented and run through a still, creating a clear vodka-like spirit.

"It starts as a clear spirit just like any other spirit drink and can be turned into a very similar taste that you would see in your liquor store," Lucas Sjostrom said.

They still need to get federal and state approval to open the distillery.

If all goes according to plan the couple hopes to start serving spirits in the next two years.
