The man fatally shot by police this weekend at a Mounds View liquor store was identified by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner Thursday.

St. Paul resident Noah Douglas Kelley, 21, died from multiple gunshot wounds at Hennepin County Medical Center at 8:22 p.m. Sunday, according to a release from the medical examiner.

Mounds View police said they encountered Kelley armed in the Merwin Liquors store in Mounds View while responding to a call of shots fired around 7 p.m. While responding, they received a second call about an armed robbery at a nearby Aldi grocery store. A man told law enforcement that another man had pointed a gun at him and forced him to drive to a liquor store and the suspect then ran inside.

Mounds View and New Brighton officers entered the liquor store, encounter Kelley and fired their guns, fatally wounding him.

Later Thursday, the Department of Public Safety released the names of the officers who discharged their weapons as Sgt. Michael Hanson, of Mounds View police, who has served in law enforcement for six years, and Officer John Thomas, of New Brighton police, who is a two-year veteran of law enforcement.

DPS said that body-worn cameras were active during the incident and that portions of the encounter were documented on body-worn and squad cameras.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident.
