A shooting suspect is now in custody after reportedly barricading himself and Red Wing authorities reopened the surrounding area, according to the city's police department.

According to the Red Wing Police Department, officers responded to a shooting in the area of Hallstrom Drive and Twin Bluff Road at about 2:30 a.m.

A man who had been shot in the neck was found in the area and was airlifted to Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus in Rochester, according to Red Wing Police Chief Roger Pohlman. The man's condition has not yet been released.

Pohlman said the suspect and victim are "acquaintances." He added an emergency response team negotiated with the shooting suspect for several hours before he surrendered.

"At first he was reluctant to speak with us," Pohlman said. "Our emergency response team made entrance into the residence and was on the main level, trying to negotiate with him."

Pohlman said one of the main challenges officers faced was remaining calm.

"You never know how people are going to react or what kind of crisis they are in in their life, so you have to be cautious and just maintain your containment and try to talk to people to figure out how we can solve the problem peacefully," he said.

In an update later Tuesday morning, police said there was no threat to nearby schools nor to the surrounding community.

Earlier, police had asked residents in the area to remain inside their homes while police set up a perimeter around the building in which the suspect was believed to be barricaded.

Police had closed the following intersections and asked the public to temporarily avoid those areas: Hallstrom Drive, Twin Bluff Road and Spruce Drive; Audrey Avenue and Hallstrom Drive; Burton Street and Twin Bluff Road; Lidberg Street and West Avenue; and Lidberg Street and Spruce Drive.

Police reopened those intersections just before 8:30 a.m.

The Goodhue County Sheriff's Office, Red Wing Fire Department, Minnesota State Patrol, and the City of Red Wing Administrative Services were among the agencies assisting at the scene.
