Proposal to change name of parkway surrounding Bde Maka Ska under discussion

The battle over names at a popular Minneapolis lake is under the spotlight once again Wednesday.

Last year, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officially renamed Lake Calhoun to its original Dakota name, Bde Maka Ska.

However, there was backlash and the debate resurfaced several weeks ago. At that point, a Minnesota appeals court ruled the DNR did not have the authority to rename the lake.

Now, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board leaders will discuss renaming the streets around the lake.

For roughly a year, the name of the lake hasn't matched the name of the street that circles it.

Some say it's time to change that.

"It probably should have been done the same time the name of the lake was changed," Londel French, Minneapolis Park Board commissioner, said. "I want to apologize personally for not taking the initiative to change it a while ago."

French is proposing changing the names of several streets—including East Calhoun Parkway and West Calhoun Parkway—to Bde Maka Ska Parkway.

However, others want "Lake Calhoun Parkway" to stay as it is.

"(I) love the old traditional name of Lake Calhoun and the roads that they named it originally, when they came up with these names," Bob Reipke, of St. Paul, said.

A public meeting is scheduled Wednesday night to gather input from people who live in the area, before the proposal goes to the full park board for a vote. That process could take several months.
