A St. Cloud man and woman are both facing charges after being accused of assaulting a black male and threatening to run him over with a truck.
Aaron Charles Stevens, 58, is charged in Stearns County with two counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon (non-firearm) and one count of aiding and abetting second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon (non-firearm).
Myrna Angelica Alanis, 41, is charged with one count of aiding and abetting second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon (non-firearm).
Each charge is a felony.
St. Cloud police say the attack was not random, and all people involved were acquaintances.
According to the criminal complaints, police were called to a fight at the intersection of 3rd Street North and 19 1/2 Avenue North in St. Cloud on Monday night.
The complaints allege Stevens was yelling at the black male, using racial and other derogatory terms. The man was reported to have had a visible cut near his mouth and was bleeding. The complaints state he told authorities he arrived at Stevens' residence that day to pick up a fan.
When Stevens arrived, he allegedly confronted the man, telling him to get off his property. He broke what appeared to be a beer bottle and threw the broken bottle at the man's face, causing the injuries, according to the criminal complaint.
Then, the man told police Stevens charged at him with a tie-down strap from his truck with metal hooks attached, court documents state.
He also said Stevens held him down and yelled to Alanis, who was in the driver's seat of the truck, to run him over, the complaint details. He also alleged Stevens later went after him with an ax.
The complaints go on to state Stevens said he kicked the man twice and had his head near the wheel of the truck. He is also alleged to have acknowledged picking up an ax in an effort to get the man out of his residence, and he reportedly acknowledged using racial slurs.
"I'm a prejudice (expletive)," the complaints states.
According to the complaints, officers located a broken bottle, hammer, ratchet strap and some blood on the ground in the general area where the assault was said to have occurred. They also reportedly observed skid marks immediately behind the truck's tires.
Officers also reportedly spoke to a witnesses who said she was driving down the road and saw a white male on the ground during an altercation. She reportedly also remembered seeing two black males on top of the white male.
Another witness said she saw the altercation from a nearby house and reportedly said she saw a white male strike a black male, as well as seeing the black male on the ground while a pickup truck went into reverse, leading her to fear "something bad was going to happen."
The complaints reports Alanis told authorities all she did was rev the truck's engine.
