Minnesota Governor Tim Walz named Sunday, May 15, Peace Officer Memorial Day in honor of peace officers who have been killed or injured in the line of duty.

"Today and every day, it is fitting to honor those peace officers who gave their lives to protect ours and to thank the law enforcement agencies for their dedication and service to Minnesota communities," Walz said in a statement.

Walz also named the week of May 15 to May 21 Police Week.

Retired Rochester Police Department Sargent Steve Franks played the bagpipes at approximately 12:00am Sunday morning to honor the day. He played in front of the Olmsted County Government Center. RPD calls it the tradition of the midnight piper.
