ABC 6 Sports recaps Round 1 of the 2022 NFL Draft

(ABC 6 NEWS) — Just when it looked like Vikings fans were about to get their new player early, the team itself called an audible.

The Vikings made a surprising move by trading the 12th overall pick to the Detroit Lions and would instead pick 32nd overall, the final pick of Round 1. With that pick, they took Lewis Cine, a safety from Georgia. Cine is recently removed from a National Championship with the Bulldogs, where he had 95 career tackles.

The first Hawkeye went in the Draft on Thursday, Tyler Linderbaum, a very highly touted center at 25 overall. Linderbaum was selected by the Baltimore Ravens after a 2021 season where he played in 14 games. Linderbaum also won the Lombardi Trophy and was named Big Ten Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year. He also finished as an Outland Trophy finalist.

There was also local history made during the Draft, as Clear Lake’s Trevor Penning went 19th overall to the New Orleans Saints. Penning is a sizable offensive lineman who has the strength to throw down incoming defensive players. Penning went to high school at Newman Catholic and will hopefully be a big grab for the Saints. He certainly has the resume after being named a first-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference player.

Rounds 2 and 3 of the NFL Draft will take place Friday while Rounds 4 through 7 will occur on Saturday.
