26th Annual Med City Marathon wraps up despite weather problems

(ABC 6 News) — The 26th annual Med City Marathon is officially in the books and this year’s participants had to endure to get those 26 miles in.

There was wind, rain, hail, sun, heat, and humidity, but all in all, hundreds were able to cross the finish line.

For the men, Michael Walentiny of Lewiston finished first overall with a time of 2:39:46.

For the women, Rochester’s own Lori Russell crossed the finish line first with a final time of 3:04:13.

While some participants had their eyes on crossing the finish line first, others just wanted to test themselves.

"So my sister actually started running and she ran her first marathon last year and I always ran through college and had a love for it ," participant Kelly Malewycki said. "After having two kids I kinda got out of it. So she just kinda inspired me to start running again so I signed up and we did it!"

Malewycki says it was her first time running a marathon and she began prepping and training in the fall and winter months shortly after the birth of her second child. She says it felt good to get that first one underneath her because she hadn’t run more than 24 miles before. She says it felt more amazing having her son give her her medal.
