(ABC 6 NEWS) - Ice cream is a favorite treat of summer, and what if you could eat the treat and get rewarded? Explore Minnesota is doing just that.
Through The Minnesota Scoop program, you only need to eat ice cream six times this summer from any participating ice cream shops in Minnesota to win prizes and rewards.
Here is how it works, you can go to one of the participating stores in the state and ask for the Minnesota Scoop punch card. They will then stamp your card, and you will repeat this five times at the same or different locations. Explore Minnesota created the program to help people enjoy summer and a tasty treat.
"Tis the season for summer road trips. I think people you know are still staying a little bit closer to home, but they are really eager to get away from home within drive distance, and there is nothing that really goes better with a summer road trip than a great scoop of ice cream, and we have hundreds of shops throughout Minnesota," said Alyssa Hayes with Explore Minnesota.
You can get any flavor from your favorite to trying the #OnlyinMN flavor that shops created for the Minnesota Scoop program.
At Piggy Blue Bar-B-Que in Austin, they use one of their favorites for their #OnlyinMN flavor.
"Chocolate hazelnut and it is kind of a classic flavor they do in Italy, and it is just one of our all-time favorites," said Piggy Blue Owner, Josh Diaz.
Over at Eat'n Ice Cream Shoppe in Albert Lea, they came up with their creation for their #OnlyinMN flavor.
"Starts with vanilla soft serve and then we put oreo pieces as well as cookie dough, mini chocolate chips, M&M's, and then we drizzle it with Hershey's syrup," said Owner of Eat'n Ice Cream Shoppe, Julie Eaton.
Once you get all six stamps, you can submit a photo of your punch card online at Explore Minnesota's website for a free Minnesota Scoop t-shirt and be entered to win weekly giveaways and grand prize travel packages that will be announced at the end of August. You can win one of seven travel packages, including places in Rochester, Owatonna, and Winona, as well as some in other parts of the state. In Rochester, you can get a two-night stay at Home2 Suites by Hilton, four passes to SPARK Children's Museum, and a $25 gift card to Buffalo Wild Wings.
Local shops said this is a great way to celebrate summer and heal people enjoy the tasty treat.
"I think it is kind of a cool idea to promote places that do ice cream and kind of get people moving around the state and find things to do; it's really fun to eat; eating is good entertainment," said Diaz.
"Just another way to bring tourism to our wonderful community of Albert Lea, and our community comes together, and we enjoy our ice cream," said Eaton.
