Albert Lea Public Library could eliminate late fines on youth materials

(ABC 6 News) — The Albert Lea City Council is looking into possibly eliminating late fees for youth materials.

In a resolution, to be voted on on May 23rd, city councilors laid out several reasons for the elimination of the fees. According to that resolution, 625 of the library’s patrons under the age of 18 cannot check out materials because of too many fines.

The resolution also explains that the cost of collecting late fines on youth materials are actually grater than the fines themselves.

If passed, this would go into effect on June 1.
