(ABC 6 NEWS) - People in Albert Lea are one step closer to having another healthcare option in town with the groundbreaking of the new MercyOne clinic on Thursday.

It has taken nearly three years to get to this point and now the first phase of about 14,000 square feet will get its start. It will include six primary care doctors and support staff and will eventually have space for specialists on a needed basis. A lot of work went into this and the president of the Albert Lea Healthcare Coalition, Brad Arends said the group had to find another healthcare provider to come to town after Mayo Clinic Health System announced it was moving some services out of Albert Lea. The group raised nearly $5 million dollars to get to this day and most of it came from the community.

Arends said, "It was the citizens of Albert Lea that said we have to have broad healthcare services in this community and those things that are being removed we want to eventually have those back, and if they would have given up we wouldn't be where we are today."

As the coalition moves through the first phase, Arends said they will need continued community support to grow the clinic.

"Actually put together a business program and have it come to fruition is also very very unusual because we had a number of hurdles, not to mention just money, To do it. And we did it, so it is very very rewarding because it was hard and it's not over," said Arends.

The first phase is set to open in July 2021 in the old Herbergers building in Albert Lea.

The groundbreaking will be held Thursday, January 14 at 10:30 am in the parking lot at 2440 Bridge Ave. in Albert Lea. People can listen to the radio from their cars to participate.
