(ABC 6 News) – In the Class A individual state wrestling championships on Saturday, Zumbrota-Mazeppa’s Caden Steffen capped off a top-notch high school career with a championship.

A late two-point takedown by the senior Steffen, a future wrestler at the University of Minnesota, capped off a 3-1 decision win over Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie’s Holt Truax.

Following his second-career individual state title victory, Steffen hugged his head coach, and father, Link Steffen. In the past two seasons, Steffen is a two-time individual and team wrestling champion.

Additionally, in Class A, Caledonia/Houston’s Kyle Cavanaugh (138 pounds) and Zach Schneider (160 pounds) both left St. Paul with individual state wrestling championships. Schneider defeated Westfield’s Colton Krell in the championship.

At 132 pounds, St. Charles’ Mark Buringa finished just short of his first career individual state title with a 12-6 loss to Pipestone Area’s Hunter Burnett.

At 145 pounds, undefeated and top-seeded Chatfield wrestler Jake Mandt lost in a 9-6 decision to Barnsville’s Brady Tweeton. Entering Saturday, Mandt was the reigning 145-pound state champion.
