(ABC 6 News) – For a 6th straight season, the Lakeville North Panthers and John Marshall Rockets met for the Section 1AAAA boys basketball championship—and for a sixth straight year, the Panthers are heading to the Class AAAA state tournament.
The Panthers topped John Marshall in a tight game on Saturday inside the Auditorium of the Mayo Civic Center, 51-46, advancing to their seventh-straight Class AAAA state tournament.
The Panthers trailed nearly the entire game, but it was a close game for the entire 36 minutes of regulation—no team led by more than eight points at any moment of the evening.
The game was tied 45-45 with under a minute left before Lakeville North’s Tyler Wahl forced a turnover and finished with a lay-up to put the Panthers ahead for the first time in the second-half. Wahl added a couple of free throws later to seal the victory for the Panthers.
"I'm just so proud of them, how hard they worked this season,” Rockets head coach Jim Daly said. “They were an absolute joy to coach. It would've been more special if we would've won today, but it won't take away from the most wins in school history with 26, and Big 9 champs, and more importantly the relationships that we've made with each other. We were having so much, we just honestly didn't want it to end. Unfortunately, it ended today."
The Rockets were led by junior Matthew Hurt, who scored 23 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in the contest.
