(ABC 6 News)- The Century Panthers boys hockey team has had a solid start to the season, and one of their key players has helped them to a 10-3 overall record.
“My dad taught me how to skate when I was two or three (years old),” Senior Forward Nick Aney said. “For as long as I can remember I’ve been playing hockey, (and) I’ve always loved it.”
Nick Aney has been a part of the Century Panthers varsity team since his sophomore year.
“I just love how you can go out there, compete and work hard, I mean its super-fast paced and fun to play,” Aney said.
“He makes things happen, he doesn't look like he’s going fast but he’s actually moving really well,” Panthers head coach Josh Klingfus said. “He sees the ice nicely and he’s got a knack to find the back of the net, he scores when he needs to score.”
“I just try to come in and work as hard as I can. I was able to get a little bigger and stronger this past off season so that’s allowed me to go in and battle harder get more loose pucks and that just leads to more opportunity to score,” Aney said.
Aney is the leading scorer for the Panthers, totaling ten goals this season, with a 83.3 shot on goal percentage.
On Saturday Nick helped secure a big win over state-ranked White Bear Lake Area high school, but he admits he has a ritual before each game.
“I like to take a long nap when I get home from school, put my robe on and have my smoothie and just kind of relax get ready to go,” Aney said.
Which worked out well for Aney on Saturday.
“It was third period we were up 2-1, with ten minutes left in the game Jon Thorvilson put a little pressure on the defenseman and then he turned it over right to me and I went down and scored. I was really pumped it was a huge game and they’re a great team and at that point, I figured we should really win this game now we can definitely do this,” Aney said.
Aney and the Panthers return to the ice on Thursday against Rochester John Marshall at the Recreation Center. Puck drops at 7:15p.m.
