(ABC 6 News)- The Kasson-Mantorville KoMets have caught fire at the right time--just before the section playoffs, and it's thanks to their two seniors, third baseman MiKayla Grant and shortstop Katie Harrington.

“Katie, she’s quick, she’s fast, she’s explosive,” KoMets head coach Paul Mann said.  “MiKayla, she has the dimension of the long ball and driving in runs.”

Mann said Harrington and Grant have a high level of talent  and "exceptional leadership skills".  “Their leadership is really what has stood out this year to go along with all of their great offensive statistics,” Mann added.

Grant has had a tremendous season at the plate--she's batting .569, has hit 8 home runs, and driven in 44 runs. Harrington is hitting just as well, batting .603 at the plate, hitting three home runs, driving in 19 runs, and stealing 25 bases. “(Katie's) fierce competiveness has been great,” Mann said.

Grant and Harrington though are more than just softball teammates--they're close friends, a bond that's developed over the years. “We started playing 14U softball together, so we’ve known each other way before high school," Grant said. "The bond is crazy."

That special chemistry helps, because it pays off on the softball diamond for Grant and Harrington. “I know being on the left side of Katie at shortstop when I’m at third, I know that not a lot of balls are going to get past us” Grant said.  “I know if I miss a hard grounder to my left Katie’s right there, she’s got the speed to get it for me.”

Harrington and Grant bring more than talent to this team--they're leaders and team players. "Our main goal is help out the team that’s it,” Harrington said.  “A win’s a win. If you’re getting better in that game, that’s all that matters.”

Harrington will continue her softball career at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey.  Grant will be part of the softball team at St. Catherine University in St. Paul.

The Komets will close out their regular season Thursday at Goodhue.
