(ABC 6 News) – Once again, section one team wrestling dominated at the Minnesota State High School State Wrestling Tournament in St. Paul.
The Zumbrota-Mazeppa Cougars (Class A) and the Kasson-Mantorville KoMets (Class AA) repeated as state team wrestling champions on Thursday, winning 31-19 over Frazee and 49-9 over Fairmont/Martin County West, respectively.
For the Cougars, it’s their second-consecutive and second overall team state wrestling title.
"It's pretty cool,” Cougars heavyweight senior wrestler Jarret Haglund said. “It's pretty cool being (two-time state champions).”
“I can't really describe it,” Cougars senior and future Minnesota Golden Gopher wrestler Caden Steffen said. “It's the best feeling I've ever had. Getting a group of guys together, working towards a common goal and achieving that goal, and we worked for it all year."
For the KoMets, it’s their third-consecutive Class AA state team championship and their fourth title in program history.
"(Coach Jamie Heidt says) Nothing is handed easy to you,” senior heavyweight wrestler Brett Paulson, who ended the dual with a fall, said. “We didn't expect to win but we were confident enough and we believed in our training and our hard work that we'd come out on top and fight and finish."
"We always had a championship in mind, always, that's our tradition,” senior teammate Ethan Shea added. “We wanted to keep that going. It's good to feel like we accomplished what we needed to, especially being my senior year."
Various KoMets and Cougars will compete in the Class A, AA, and AAA state individual wrestling tournaments at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul on Friday and Saturday.
