(Rochester Minn.) – The Rochester Honkers announced today the signing of utility player Michael Michalak from Des Moines Area Community College. He is a hometown product who graduated from Rochester Mayo High school in 2015. 

Michalak is a 6-foot-3, 185-pound sophomore from Rochester, Minn. He started at shortstop for the Mayo High School Spartans every year since his sophomore season. That season, he led the team to the Minnesota Class AAA State Tournament, batting .400 through the entire playoffs. During his senior season, Michael led the Spartans with a .553 batting average in 11 games. He hit three doubles and two triples while driving in eight runs. On the base paths, Michalak stole five bases and scored nine runs.

After graduating from high school, Michael started college at DMACC and made an immediate impact, starting 54 out of 55 games for the Bears. He hit .359 from the plate, including .337 during conference play. He finished second on the team in hits (70), RBIs (50) and double (15). Michalak was major player in every category. He was a threat to go deep, hitting nine home runs on the season. He was also dangerous on the base paths, stealing 11 bases in as many chances and scoring 54 runs. In the field, he played many roles as a utility player, turning nine doubles plays during the season. 

This season, Michalak has been playing a step above his teammates with team-highs in batting average (.414), six home runs, two triples, 12 doubles, 45 runs, and 32 RBIs. DMACC is 20-19 on the season with a 9-7 record in the ICCAC. On Wednesday, the Bears split a doubleheader against #11 Iowa Western, including a 4-0 win in game one. DMACC hosts Iowa Central this weekend.

The Rochester Honkers 24th season begins on Tuesday, May 30th when the team hosts the Mankato Moondogs in their home opener at Mayo Field at 7:05 pm.
