(ABC 6 NEWS)- The Byron girls track and field team finished in 2nd place in Tuesday’s Section 1A true team meet in Winona—week in and week out, the Bears are led by their versatile junior star, Emma Weatherly.

Weatherly, who has been a member of the Bears’ varsity squad since 7th grade, has served as an “inspiration” for her team. “She’s an outstanding leader,” Bears head coach Charro Coleman said. “She’s there for the team, and she’s a great leader by example. She’s just a great person in general, and a lot of people respect her for that.”

Weatherly is not just a great leader though—she has a long list of accomplishments and accolades at Byron. Weatherly holds the school record in the 300-meter hurdles, but she no longer runs that event—her main focus is the 100-meter hurdles, long jump, and the triple jump. “Her triple jump this year at 36-9 is outstanding. It puts her right up there at the top of the list.”

“Long jumping, she’s 16-8 at her best. She set that last week, so she’s doing very well. Her times and distances are getting better from one week to the next.”

In the previous two seasons, Weatherly has reached the state track and field meet—she placed in the top nine in three separate events as a freshman, and went to state as a sophomore in two separate events and making podium for both events.

In order for her to reach her third straight meet, Weatherly said she needs to maintain her normal approach. “I think the easiest way to prepare is to relax and not to worry too much about it,” Weatherly said. “You just have to do the best that you can, and know that you just have to put it all out ther. I think it’s easiest if you take it one event at a time, and my goal is just to do better than the last meet.”

Weatherly isn’t just focused on individual goals, she’s focused on the team as well—Coleman said she is always looking to help the team improve and do “whatever they need to” to win meets. “She’s willing to do anything for the team,” Coleman said. “Her work ethic is outstanding so it’s just a lot of fun when you have someone that works that hard is willing to give back to the team whenever they can.”

Weatherly and the Bears will compete at the Hiawatha Valley League (H-V-L) Conference meet on Saturday.
