(ABC 6 News)- The second ranked Class AA Stewartville Tigers volleyball team last made a state appearance in 2015, this year their leader and captain has one goal, to get them back to state.

Senior Emily Rinken has been a part of the varsity squad since she was a sophomore, the same year she first experienced the state tournament.

“It’s literally an experience of a lifetime, its every little volleyball girls dream,” Rinken said.

“Her leadership from having been on a state team before helps us kind of see where we want to go and she knows what it’s like to be there,” Head Coach John Dzubay said.  “I think she is trying to encourage everyone, to make them work hard inorder to have a chance to get back there.”

Rinken is a competitor, which shows through since the Tigers are currently 8-1 on the season.

“I always think about the game and what I need to do to be the most successful,” Rinken said

“Rinken is the key to their success in the libero position,” Dzubay said.

The libero position is a full-time back row specialist who wears the opposite color jersey.  When the ball is not in play, the libero can replace any back-row player without any notice to the officals.

“People don’t realize, well coaches realize how important that position is,” Dzubay said.  “The people that get the headlines are the hitters, how many serves you get, but she’s in the trenches of passing the ball all the time, getting it to her center so everybody else looks good.”

“It’s hard to be that big of a leader all the time but the biggest thing that really gets me to keep my leadership is just all my other teammates,” Rinken said.

Dzubay likes to refer to Rinken as the ‘Brett Farve of the volleyball team.’

“He played because he loved to play I mean he was good and he loved to play and she loves to play volleyball,” Dzubay added.

Rinken loves to play and loves to win, and hopefully that includes a state title this year.

Rinken and the Tigers return to the court on Thursday, September 14 against Triton.
