(Rochester Minn.) -  The Rochester Honkers have announced that Eddie Mathis, a left-handed pitcher from Bellarmine University will return to the Honkers this summer.  Mathis brings with him fellow Bellarmine left-handed pitcher Hunter Spencer.

Mathis, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound junior will be spending his second summer with the Honkers. The Pewee Valley, Ky. native compiled a 3-3 record, striking out 35 over 27 1/3 innings last summer.  He was shut down at the end of the first half after reaching his innings limit set by Bellarmine.

Mathis finished his sophomore season at Bellarmine leading the teams in wins(nine), ERA (2.70), strikeouts (77), and innings pitched (103.1).  He was just named a 2018 preseason first-team All-Midwest Region selection by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Spencer, a 6-foot-4 200-pound senior, returns to the Northwoods League, but as a Honker, after spending a majority of the 2017 season with the Waterloo Bucks.  The Scottsburg, Ind. native went 1-1 with a 4.29 ERA. He threw 29 1/3 innings and struck out 22.

Spencer finished the 2017 Bellarmine season 7-5 with a 3.69 ERA in 15 starts.  He led his team in complete games (six) and was second in strikeouts (71), wins (seven), and innings pitched (92.2). For his efforts he was named first-team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference as a starting pitcher.  In 2016, Spencer was named the GLVC Pitcher of the Year after finishing the season with a 6-2 record and a 2.18 ERA.

Bellarmine starts their 2018 season February 16th with a three-game series at the University of Montevallo before returning home for their home opener on February 24th versus Ashland University.
